Day at the Zoo!

It was such a bummer that we did not get to go to the zoo as a class, but me and Bea were able to go this morning. We got there around 10:30am when they opened, got a free parking spot right up front on the grass. It was a fresh, but sunny morning and the animals were also feeling very lively today. I got some funny pictures, lots of them were play fighting together as well. I was also surprised by how many baby animals there were. 


Then it was nap time for some others... 

 

It was a great day for the zoo, and a much needed break from studying before finals next week. Thank you Dr. Williams for arranging this for us!

    I am glad you had a chance to visit the zoo, and I am also sorry we could not do it together as a class. Your photos were great. I think the giraffes are the most photogenic.

Thinking Like a Mountain

            On January 23rd, we discussed excerpts from Aldo Leopold’s A Sand County Almanac as an introduction to environmental literature. In the Thinking Like a Mountain section, Leopold explains how a wolf howl carries different meanings for various creatures: fear for the deer it hunts, opportunity for the scavenging coyote, and alarm for the hunter. Yet, as Leopold writes, "only the mountain has lived long enough to listen objectively to the howl of a wolf." Unlike the other actors, only the mountain perceives the broader ecological balance rather than immediate survival concerns.       Leopold recounts a pivotal moment when he assisted in killing a wolf pack and watched "a fierce green fire dying" in the eyes of an old wolf.
