Greer Island Hike

For our final trip to the Nature Center, my group decided to explore the trail on Greer Island. Before we left the service center, we were warned about the legendary Goat Man — a big, white, ape-like creature supposedly spotted on the island in the 1960s. The story goes that he would jump out of trees onto the hoods of unsuspecting teenagers’ cars. Luckily, we didn’t encounter any monsters on our hike — or even any other hikers. It was a quiet, peaceful day.

In July 1969, tales of the 'Lake Worth Monster' terrified Fort Worth. But was it real?

At the start of the trail, we crossed a man-made land bridge, which was really pleasant. There was a nice breeze, and the sun wasn’t too harsh. We spotted a blue heron and got to enjoy beautiful views of Lake Worth. Once we made it to the island, we took a quick detour off the trail to explore the levee, where we saw the intersection of the Trinity River and Lake Worth.

The entire trail was mostly shaded, which made for a comfortable walk. We passed a small gazebo and several benches scattered along the lakeside. They seemed like perfect spots to sit, decompress, and take in the view.

Now that our visits to the Nature Center are wrapped up, my group is focused on compiling all the pictures and videos we took to create social media content! Even though our class is over, I definitely plan to keep taking trips out to the FWNCR — I really enjoyed our time outside this semester.
